Moving is already one of the more stressful things most people do, between packing, coordinating logistics, and making sure nothing gets left behind. Cleaning the place you are leaving behind often gets pushed to the last possible moment, which is exactly the wrong approach if you want your full security deposit back. This checklist walks through what a genuinely thorough move-out clean covers, room by room, so you know what to expect whether you are doing it yourself or hiring it out.
Why move-out cleaning matters more than it seems
Most Jacksonville leases require the unit to be returned in the same condition it was received, reasonable wear and tear excepted. In practice, that means your landlord or property manager will walk through the unit and check specific things: inside the oven, inside the refrigerator, behind and under appliances if they are movable, inside every cabinet and closet, and the condition of bathroom fixtures. A quick surface wipe down before handing over the keys almost never covers all of that, which is why cleanliness disputes over security deposits are so common.
Start with a plan: top to bottom, back to front
Before diving into any single room, it helps to clean in a logical order. Work from the top of each room down (ceiling fans and light fixtures before countertops, countertops before floors) so that dust and debris fall onto surfaces you have not cleaned yet instead of the other way around. Within the home, it usually makes sense to save the kitchen and bathrooms for last, since they take the most time and you do not want to track dirt back through rooms you have already finished.
Kitchen checklist
- Inside and outside of the refrigerator, including door seals and the freezer
- Inside the oven, including racks, and the stovetop or range top
- Inside and outside the microwave
- All cabinet interiors and exteriors, plus drawers
- Countertops, backsplash, and sink, including the faucet and any garbage disposal
- Floors, vacuumed and mopped, including under any movable appliances
The oven and refrigerator are usually the two items that take the longest, and they are also the two items landlords check most closely, since built-up grease or old food residue is hard to miss during a walkthrough.
Bathroom checklist
- Toilet, inside and out, including the base and behind the tank
- Shower or tub, including grout and any soap scum buildup
- Sink, counter, and mirror
- Inside medicine cabinets and any vanity drawers or cabinets
- Exhaust fan vent, floors, and baseboards
Bathrooms accumulate soap scum, hard water spots, and mildew over time, especially in Jacksonville's humid climate, so this is another area where a quick wipe down often is not enough to satisfy a move-out inspection.
Bedrooms and living areas
- Closets, including shelving and the floor
- Baseboards and door frames throughout
- Light switches, outlet covers, and any wall marks
- Windows sills and tracks
- Floors, vacuumed and mopped, including corners
Common reasons landlords deduct from a security deposit
Beyond visible dirt, the most common cleanliness-related deductions come from areas that are easy to overlook: a greasy oven, a refrigerator with old food residue, bathroom grout with mildew, or dust and grime along baseboards. None of these are difficult to clean, but they take real time, which is exactly what gets skipped when a move-out clean is squeezed into the last hour before handing over keys.
DIY versus hiring a professional
A DIY move-out clean is possible, but it usually takes several hours for even a modest apartment once you account for the inside-cabinet and inside-appliance work most people skip in everyday cleaning. A professional move-out cleaning service (ours starts at $180 for apartments) covers the full checklist above in a fraction of the time, and gives you a clear record that the unit was professionally cleaned before you handed back the keys.
Timing your move-out clean
Schedule your clean as close to your actual move-out date as possible, ideally the same day you finish moving belongings out, since an empty unit is much faster and easier to clean thoroughly than one that is still partially furnished. If you are coordinating a final walkthrough with your landlord, try to schedule the clean before that walkthrough so any issues can be addressed while you still have access to the unit.
